Countdown to the 2011 TNTSS Championship - Fourth Place - Harry Phelps

With Harry not getting on the racetrack until June, Mother Nature really helped him by raining out a bunch of early season races and forcing them to be re-scheduled.  He then qualified in the top five a total of three times including a number one.  Add to that three quarterfinal finishes, a semi-final along with a runner-up and it's easy to see why Harry’s TNTSS season was such a success.

"I had my best results at the Canadian races, after missing the Cayuga race in May," said Harry.  "I qualified well both days at St Thomas and got down to three cars.  Then at Cayuga on Labor Day, I took out the points leader and won the $200 bounty - thanks to Kevin and Laurie Orr - and then had my best finish of the year with a runner-up on Sunday."

Racing since the late 1970's, Harry started out in a Stock Eliminator car with a 1968 Mustang.  He then found himself winning a couple of Street ET Championships in 1983 & 1984.  It was 1985 when he started racing the 1969 Nova he runs today.  That same car took Harry to victory at the 1991 Empire Nationals (over Steve McCarrick - another long-time TNTSS supporter).

The Nova has a 468 big block with a Powerglide transmission and a 9" Ford rear-end fabricated by Rich Poteralski at Richbilt Fabrications who also built the headers.

“Also my son Harris and his wife Sarah are expecting a baby girl in December so we'll see how that affects Harris' racing career,” added Harry.

"I want to thank my wife Audrey who wasn't able to make all the races but always made sure I had all the food, drinks & everything else I needed on all the trips.  And thanks to Steve McCarrick as back in June my weather station quit on me but Steve kept me updated at each of the races."

Harry also mentioned thanks to Russ & Arlene Parker and Ted Barnes & family for such a friendly & organized series.  “Thanks to Joe at Joe's Transmission and all the event sponsors that make all this happen," he added.

For 2012, Harry says he plans to run the full TNTSS schedule shooting for that first win and qualifying for the Trailer Shop / ERD Race of Champions.
