Countdown to the 2011 TNTSS Championship - Second Place - Mark Herbold

Mark Herbold - photog Dale BoeruELMA, NEW YORK (November 2, 2011)  Many drivers and teams wonder how to succeed in drag racing.  Well just look at what Mark Herbold and his partner Gary Schintzius achieved in the 2011 Joe’s Transmission TNT Super Series.  They accumulated an impressive 610 points, earning them a second place finish overall in the highly competitive sportsman series.

Having attended a few events here and there in previous years, Mark and Gary didn’t really chase the TNTSS points until two years ago, where they finished third.

Then in 2011, the Elma, New York based team was solid in qualifying all season long, posting three number one’s.  Add to that two quarter-final appearances, two semi-finals, one event win and they were battling for the top spot right up to the last event.

Highlights for this season according to Mark were the three number one qualifiers.  “And that weekend at Lancaster where we won one race and finished in the semi’s in another race on the same day!”

The team’s weapon of choice is a 1994 Chevrolet Corvette that he and Gary have owned since 2007.  A 323 cubic inch small block Chevy with Buick heads for power, the car is capable of quarter mile runs in the 8.50 range.  Other racecars over the years include a 1968 Camaro, 1977 Vega, 1977 Monza, 1932 Bantam Roadster and a BDR dragster.  "I've driven for people like Dave Kennedy, Jim Salemi, Joe Schmitz,  Phil & Nancy Harnden, Dave Dudley and of course, Gary Schintzius."

Mark Herbold - photog Dale BoeruMark has been going to the drag strip since he was 13 years old when Curt Weber got him hooked.  Since then, he's had many accomplishments.  “We were pretty proud of finishing third last year in the 2010 TNTSS points," added Mark.  "And to improve to second this year is amazing.  Plus we've had many wins at Lancaster and Cayuga over the years racing in both Competition Eliminator and Super Gas."  Mark says he is honored to have raced against some of today's best such as Mike Janis, Fred Hahn, Jim Zakia and FJ Smith.

Mark was very quick to thank Gary and Alice Schintzius and family.  “Thanks to my wife, Stephanie and Sarah,” added Mark.  “And Crockett, Dave Kennedy, KTR Engines, BDR Torque Converters, Joe’s Transmission, the Barnes family, Russ and Arlene Parker, my Mom and Dad and my friends who have supported me over the years.”

Looking ahead to 2012, the pair will once again be going after a TNTSS championship and will also be looking to get their name on the Trailer Shop / ERD Race of Champions trophy.
